Just So You Know Those Adverts are Crap!

KiKi has had a cold for about three days now. She almost missed the last day of school before the half term break, but she was insistent that she needed to go to school so she could parade about in her leopard costume that her MiMi (my mom) sent her. She is a strong willed one, ya know.

The past two days she has just had this really violent cough that she just can't seem to shake. Despite the cough medicines I have given her orally, there is really no change. Mind you, it doesn't sound like it is deep in her chest, more at the back of her throat. It doesn't really bother her until bedtime and then it kicks in so bad that she can barely catch her breath. So, I decided to use what any good mom in the western hemisphere would use, good ol' Vicks Vapor Rub.

Let me for the record say that this ad is crap.

There is no gently smoothing the jelly-like substance across your child's chest. It is more like you have to hog tie or pin your child to the mattress and in the two seconds that your child's chest is actually exposed, rub on a bunch of menthol smelling goo. Meanwhile, they are screaming at the top of their lungs like they are being gutted (yes, really, that much fun).

I see no part in the ad that says I may or may not have to use rope in order to apply this product. However, I will concede defeat because, dammit, Vicks actually worked to stop her coughing.

sorry you have to deal with a nasty old cold We have all had one here and mine has just made its second round.

My son loves Vicks...it never was a problem to rub it on him...he just loves it!
lol. did you try lots of vicks on feet and then socks?
It is bloomin good stuff but yes, have to wrestle it on here too. I have a strong willed four year old girl too.
My parents used to use it on us as kids as well and did work a treat! Nasty smelling stuff though.
Poor Kiki! I hope she's better soon. For both your sakes.
I'm fortunate that Indy doesn't mind vapor rub. In fact, he quite likes it (he's a weird kid) and doesn't mind when I have to rub it on his chest. What *I* mind however is that I cannot get the smell off my hands afterward. Ick.
I had the same battle with my 3 year old this morning. I second @newdaynewlesson though. We've done the foot thing and it seems to work.

That stuff is amazing, all right.
I love that stuff, and I've also heard that putting in on feet (see above comment) actually works. Must be that reflexology stuff. Last year I put it under Little Guy's nose as he was very bunged up. Next thing I know he's screaming his head off because it had got on to his chapped lips. Ouch!
There is not a lot to like about Vick's V-R. Except for the fact that it actually works and it doesn't cost the national debt! Sometimes the old remedies really are the best!
i like hot water with ginger and lemon :)
Ha! Yes they should put a warning...must hogtie your child before using! I actually loved the stuff when I was a kid. It always made me feel so much better!

I totally agree with you on this. For some odd reason my munchkin hates this stuff and I'm not sure why. It does what it's supposed to do but getting it on her is half the battle lol.
Oh poor KiKi!! This did make me chuckle though.
