My Point of View- The Writing Workshop Fiasco
As a blogger who has been at this for just shy of three years, sometimes I run out of ideas, sometimes I need a bit of inspiration, and sometimes I just can't get the creative juices flowing. I went to the writing workshop at Cybermummy hoping that I would learn some techniques that would help to spark my writing fires, which have been simmering at just above ember levels lately (sometimes it feels like you have written the same thing over and over and over again). I didn't get that AT ALL. In fact that first half of the session basically had NOTHING to do with writing at all.
The first part of the session was spent on blog names or as Ms. King referred to them as "titles", now, I have been 3 Bedroom Bungalow for nearly three years. I have no intention of changing the name of my blog. My blog name is part of me. The Bungalow is my little slice of the Internet where I can write about my life. Ms. King did not seem to understand this fact about bloggers at all. Seeing as how she is a novelist and journalist, I let it slide.
At one point something sparked my interest and I raised my hand. Maybe I should have kept it down because by this point I had seen Ms. King suggest that a few people change the name of their blogs (including Nickie from Typecast) and say that writing about your disabled child wasn't really all that interesting of a subject because it wasn't really that topical (how insulting is that?). I don't really know. So, I explained how Dear So and So was a feature on my blog and explained the link up (meme style) and how I had participants each week...yadda yadda. Then she sort of cut me off. She then suggested that "Dear So and Whatever" -with a flip of her hand- should be an entirely different blog. At this point I sent out a couple of tweets.
"I'm sorry, but this writing workshop is rubbish"
"I'm sorry I don't have time to write 5 different blogs"
I tried to start paying attention again. Ms. King seemed to be transitioning into actual writing tips but they seemed a bit rubbish as well. I tweeted again based on one of the tips we were given.
"Writing funny rhymes/limericks? WTF? #cybermummy11 #rubishworkshop
and
"Apparently if you have a new idea, you need to start a new blog" #rubbishworkshop
I had no idea that these tweets were being broadcast on the big screen at the Pampers PR table. NO IDEA. I found out about that later and was a bit mortified, really.
At this point I felt I had been insulted and patronized. I wasn't learning anything I haven't already figured out in the past three years. Have I mentioned that I have been blogging for three years? My friend and I decided to leave.
OK, this is where I guess things went really tits up. Do you know how hard it is to leave a conference room when you are loaded down like a Sherpa with bags? I had on a rucksack and was carrying the swag bags that we were given upon entrance to Cybermummy AND a shopping sack with crisps in it. It wasn't exactly a graceful exit. I didn't mean to be loud when I left AT ALL. I just didn't want to waste anymore of my time.
*I* wasn't getting ANYTHING from this workshop. *I* paid £100 for my ticket to Cybermummy another £50 for my room at my hotel and another £30 for my train ticket down to the event. I didn't have a sponsor, all this money came out of my own pocket. I was really irritated (to the point of wanting to curse at Ms. King) because this session was a complete waste of my time and frankly my money. I had been insulted and patronized; probably not even intentionally. As far as I was concerned there were other things happening at Cybermummy where I may have the opportunity for me to actually learn something or enjoy my day; so I left.
I had no idea that others would leave.
If you got something out of this writing workshop, I am really happy for you. I heard it got better towards the end when Ms. King started focusing on writing. You know, what she should have focused on since she is a novelist/journalist and not a blogger (or at least not a blogger who regularly blogs).
Let me note, that I did go up to both Susanna and Sian, two of the organizers of Cybermummy and tell them why I left. I apologized for my bags being loud when I left. Anybody who knows me knows I am not mean or malicious; I was irritated but wasn't intending on it being a big deal. I did not intend it to be overtly rude. I just wanted to go enjoy the rest of Cybermummy. And I did. This was the ONLY negative experience I had the entire day.

Karaoke Song Meme
So I have had a bit of a ponder on this question and I can say without a shadow of a doubt I would sing this:
Mind you, I will charge extra if you want to see me do any of the following: Cheesy 80's dancing, chest bumps, back flips, line dancing, hair flipping/shaking, popping and locking, and break dancing; all of which was in that scene of the movie Footloose.
I guess since this is a meme I should tag some people. I am going to tag: NotSupermum , Jess (and you aren't allowed to pick Shoop, Jess!), and StayAtHomeBabe.

New Feature-Do Something Silly Saturday
So, I have decided that I will try to post a video on Saturdays with me (and probably my kids) doing silly things. It could be jumping on the trampoline (well, when it is fixed) to playing a silly game. As long as we have fun, it will be made available to you. I just hope it will inspire somebody to not take life so seriously and have a bit of fun.
I really don't know how this will work out. I may only post this every once in a blue moon, I just thought it would be a laugh. Look for the first video this Saturday.

Q & A
Which living person do you admire the most, and why?
This is an easy one. My Granny. She was a military wife just like me, only she had to deal with not having the modern technology that I did. She successfully raised two little girls (my mom and aunt) while my PaPa was off to war (Vietnam) and is one of the strongest people I know.
When were you the happiest?
I was the happiest I will ever be on my wedding day. I was surrounded by friends and family and marrying the most perfect man for me.
What was your most embarrassing moment?
10 grade in math class. I got my period early and didn't know it. I went to the chalk board at the front of the class to work out a problem given by the teacher with a big old red mark on my butt. I wanted to die that day.
Besides property, what is the most expensive thing you have bought?
My Jeep. I love my orange jeep. I actually went and made sure they had an orange Jeep before we bought it.
What is your most treasured possession?
My engagement ring.
Where would you like to live?
If I could move my entire family to England I would live here forever.
What is your favorite smell?
Cherry blossoms. Reminds me of growing up in Washington DC in the spring.
Who would you get to play you in a film of your life?
Sandra Bullock. I love her. Plus she is my husband's "freebie". Ya know if they met in a crowded bar and she wanted to ya know with him.."freebie"
What is your favorite book?
I have to choose one? OK, well my favorite book is "The Giving Tree". It makes me weep EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I read it to my kids.
What is your most unappealing habit?
I bite my nails. I don't even realize I am doing it.
What would be your fancy dress costume of choice?
Oooo I would love to have a pirate costume.
What is your earliest memory?
I remember hiding behind the couch when I was about 2 years old because the Michael Jackson Thriller video came on and it scared me.
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Trashy reality television. Seriously. I can sit down and watch a stupid reality show like Four Weddings and be happy as a lark. Here you thought I was all sophisticated! (ok even that made me laugh).
What do you owe your parents?
More than I could ever repay.
To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why?
I can't think of anyone. Honestly. I am generally a nice person.
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
My husband and daughters. They are my everything.
What does love feel like?
A warm ember of fire in the pit of your stomach.
What was the best kiss of your life?
The first kiss with my husband. I remember every detail. Of course I am not going to write about it here.
Which words or phrases do you overuse?
I knew I used the phrase "you've got to be kidding me" too much when my kids started parroting me.
What's the worst job you have done?
I did data entry at an accounting office. The actual job itself wasn't horrible, but the people I worked with were awful. Plus the office always smelled like cigarette smoke because of the chain smoking office manager. I am not a fan of indoor smoking.
If you could edit your past, what would you change?
Absolutely nothing. The whole time space continuum might be ruined and then I might not be here. Scary thought.
What is the closest you have came to death?
When I was 8 years old I was in a horrible auto accident. The van my mother was driving was hit from behind when we were going down the interstate. That made the van spin out of control and then we hit another car and the van rolled. I was not wearing my seat belt because I was trying to lay down on the middle bench seat to take a nap (we were on a long road trip). I was thrown from the car. Actually thrown is a little too dramatic. When the van was rolling the windows all broke out. When the van was on it's side I went out one of the busted windows and the van continued to roll over me. I ended up with scraped knees and scared out of my wits. My mother was frantic when the crash stopped because I wasn't in the car. I was trying to crawl back into the car.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I finished University online. When I started I had a 2 year old and a 6 month old baby.
When did you cry last?
I honestly don't remember. I get scared and disappointed and angry, but I am not usually a crier.
How do you relax?
A glass of wine and a good book usually do the trick.
What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
This is a tossup between a dishwasher or a top loading extra capacity American style washer. I really hate dishes and laundry.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Laugh. Life isn't worth living if you don't have a bit of laughter in your life.
Time to do some tagging. I am going to tag....

Dear So and So...Anka Edition
--------------------------
Dearest self,
Remember last year's goal: a day without technology a week? Tough one, huh? At least one day a month, and you weren't able to pull it off. You should've try better, I tell you.
Read below to see why.
===
Dear Japanese grammar,
There was a time when we knew each other quite well. I am sorry we lost touch. But now, since my laptop is out of the way, we can spend beautiful afternoons together. And we can bring some new friends, too. Like Spanish, German. Maybe Finnish?
どうですか。
===
Dear friends,
Do come by and visit. When I am not hiding behind a 10" computer screen, I am really a nice person. Witty and talkative. I can catch your jokes and even get involved in some kind of conversation.
Don't you just love the new me?
===
Full list of hobbies,
Be patient. Out of 7 afternoons a week, you'll all get your right turn. Dusting the old guitar and taking out all my cameras for the week. And always having the hook and yarn with me, as addictive as anything else...
Very anxious to make your acquaintance again.
===
Dearest laptop,
Isn't it odd to have me writing these lines just in front of you? Don't be mad... I am coming back every morning for a couple of hours. We do need to set our relationship straight, we should definitely see other people.
Take good care of you.
===
Dearest readers,
Please, don't go on laptop detox just today. Kat is having a short vacation and I am hosting Dear so and so for the week. I wouldn't want her to think I am spoiling her fun meme. Go ahead and join, by linking to your post in the linky gadget below.
Have a great weekend everybody. And do go for a walk, without the laptop...

Fashion Faux Pas
1. The Mom Uniform. Oh, don't pretend you don't know what I am talking about. Ill fitting shirt (usually a t-shirt or sweatshirt), jeans, and old trainers. Sometimes you did your hair that morning, meh, sometimes you didn't. Ring a bell?
2. Tight-rolled jeans. I may have been a kid in the 80s but you know all 8 year old little girls worshiped Debbie Gibson in the 80s and dammit if she tight-rolled her jeans, so was I! Never mind that it made the bottom of your jeans look ridiculous, but it was also ridiculously hard to get right the first time, especially for an 8 year old.
3. Mall Bangs (Fringe) (yes my British friends in the States we call your fringe your bangs) (feel free to snigger). This "look" if you want to call it that required massive amounts of hair spray (we did no favors for the environment back then) and a curling iron, a large barreled one worked the best to achieve the right amount of poof at the top. Then you had to curl some of the bangs down towards your forehead. Basically it looked like someone stuck a dinner roll on your forehead, and that is if you got it right! If you got it wrong, you walked around with a curling iron burn on your forehead. I am still afraid of curling irons.
4. Backwards clothes. I firmly blame the rap group Kris Kross. (the Mac Daddy, make ya jump jump, Daddy Mac, make ya jump jump!)
So, since this is a meme I need to pass this bad boy on. I am going to pass it to SueAnn, Vegemitevix, Jess, and since we all need to know about bad boy faux pas Captain Dumbass .

What's Your Favorite Feel Good Song?
And the Winner is...
"More Than a Feeling" by Boston. No, it isn't just because Brad Delp, the original singer for the group has probably the best mustache known to man in the the music video. No, it isn't because my husband used to play the song constantly on Rock Band. No, it isn't because it is probably in one of the best scenes in the history of the show "Scrubs" (ok, it might be a little because of that). It is because it really is one of those songs that you can't help but either nod along to, or sing along to, or play a little air guitar to (not that I would EVER do that..ever...much.). I mean, it really just makes you FEEL good.
I dare you to not at least tap your toe along.
Also, if you have time watch the Scrubs version. Air band awesomeness.
I am going to pass this little meme along to....Tara from Sticky Fingers, Jess from This Life is MIne, Amy from The Bitchin Wives Club, Not From Around Here, and Melissa from Smitten By Britain. Tag your it. Have fun girls!!

Anger- Sometimes It Gets the Best of Us
Last night after an hour of asking her to clean her room, I had had enough. Looking back at it now, time out would have worked to fix the situation. Instead, I yelled. It did absolutely no good, the room still isn't clean. I made her go to bed and told her we would deal with it today. I was just too irrate to deal with it at the time.
Today, when she gets home, we are going to try this again. No anger. We are going to get the room clean, eat our dinner, take our baths, and have a little peace in this house. No yelling. Yelling just makes the situation louder, not better. And so help me God if she isn't compliant, her butt is going in time out.

The Hardest MeMe Ever!
What is the bravest thing that you feel you've ever done? Physically, emotionally, or whatever.
I think the bravest thing I have ever done was leaving school to move to Texas when I was 21. My husband was in tech school for the Air Force in Witchita Falls, Texas for 6 months. After he had been there for about 2 months, my parents and granny loaded all my stuff into two cars and we headed from Charleston, SC to Texas. Now it wasn't exactly the move itself that took the bravery, it was the fact that it was the first time that I would live a significant distance away from my family. To say that I depend on my family a lot for emotional support would be a gross understatement. My family is my world. They are my rock. They are my sanity when the rest of my world is insane. Leaving that comfort zone (against my mother's wishes) was the bravest thing I ever did. Since then I have moved even further from home, but without that first step I would have never had any of the adventures that I have had.
What one talent do you wish you had that you don't?
I wish I could sing. I reeeeally wish I could sing. In my head I am the best singer ever. In reality I probably sound like a frog trying to be a bird.
We all have our reasons for blogging but what would be your ultimate goal for your blog or as a blogger?
The ultimate goal I have for my blog is for me to have an outlet for me to put all the pent up mental energy into. The comments mean the world to me, but ultimately I write for myself. Sure, I think about what readers might want to read about, but if I don't like what I am putting onto the computer screen, I don't publish it.
You can trade lives with any one person for a month. Who would it be and why?

If I could trade lives with one person for a month it would have to be Tony Bourdain. Ok, I don't want his body but I want his mad skills and travel opportunities. I mean he is a tall lanky semi unattractive 50-somthing year old guy, but the man can cook, he travels all over the world, and he gets to have the most awesome experiences that I have ever seen. If you have not checked out his show on the Travel Channel called "No Reservations" I highly recommend it. I also want to be able to steal his wicked wit and sense of humor.
There's a fire and your family is safe but you have the chance to save any one item from your house. What would it be and why?
If I got to save one item from my house it would be a painting that I have hanging over my fireplace. It is called "Tara" and it is by Jim Booth who is an artist from my hometown. When the sqeual to Gone With the Wind called Scarlett was filmed in Charleston, Jim went out to the movie studio's facade of the plantation house they had built on Johns Island, SC and painted it. It is a beautiful piece of artwork. This was also a very special Christmas present from my Granny.
You have the chance to go back in time and warn yourself before making a bad choice. What choice would it be and what would you tell yourself?
I would warn myself to never ever ever ever ever get a credit card. I hate being in debt. I know that most Americans are in debt, but seriously, I have little to show for the credit card debt. I have an education to show for my student loans but I have loads of CRAP thanks to credit cards. I seriously would kick my own ass.
Ok now whoever would like me to ask them some questions (not the ones above), leave a comment that says something along the lines of interview me, send me some questions, or whatnot. I will try to get something sent to you as quickly as I can!

I Got MeMe'd
Anyways here is the meme. I am also tagging...Captain Dumbass, Heinous, Badass Geek and Cameron. Daddy bloggers need a manly meme to do.
I'm a Chevrolet Corvette!

You're a classic - powerful, athletic, and competitive. You're all about winning the race and getting the job done. While you have a practical everyday side, you get wild when anyone pushes your pedal. You hate to lose, but you hardly ever do.
Take the Which Sports Car Are You? quiz.
On your mark, get set, GO!
*I technically wrote this on Thursday, but lets pretend ok?

Saturday MeMe
1. Link the person who tagged you.
2. Mention the rules on your blog.
3. Tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours.
4. Tag 6 following bloggers by linking them.
5. Leave a comment on each of the tagged blogger’s blogs letting them know they’ve been tagged.
1.) I generally don't get along with other women. It isn't that I don't have women friends, it is just harder for me to become close friends with girls because I know how catty they are. Men are so much easier to get along with because I can read them easier. I think this is because I grew up with a brother.
2.) I have one toenail that is half tan half white. It looks like a birthmark, but I have no idea what caused it. This is why I keep my toenails painted. My favorite shade of polish is OPI "I'm really not a Waitress" red.
3.) I don't like to cuddle. I am not a snuggler. When I am sleeping I don't like to be touched. This drives my husband batty cause he likes to cuddle, snuggle and crush me while I am sleeping. I really feel like I am being crushed. It is seriously hard for me to breath if anyone is touching me while I am trying to sleep.
4.) I have naturally curly hair, but a lot of people don't know that because I keep my hair straightened. If I don't straighten my hair, I throw it up in a ponytail. It takes me 20 min to straighten my hair in the morning, but it is soooo worth it.
5.) I might have Seasonal Affect Disorder, but I won't go get it diagnosed. During the winter I am extremely moody. Lack of sunlight is a bitch.
6.) I think my hometown is the most beautiful city in the world. London and Paris have nothing on Charleston, SC.

Lets see... now I have to tag some people. I tag Captain Dumbass, Middle Aged Woman, Dan, Slick, Honeywine and Jen.
