I feel really stupid for asking this, and lazy because I didnt google it. But what IS that post with the wood work on top and the faded sign. Is it like a basketball/quidditch goal?

Dude I know this is retarded but I freaked when I saw the fifth picture thinking they might fall into what looks like a deep hole; into the center of the earth.

The basketball hoop was probably used for holding heads. You know those English people.
