Dependent on Technology

I woke up Sunday morning feeling sluggish. It was entirely too early according to my body's internal clock to be awake on a Sunday morning. I checked my computer's clock. Nope it was half past 8. A decent time. I got to work making breakfast, tidying and going about my days activities.

About 7pm I slowed down and got back on the computer. I waited for my husband to get online for a chat. And waited. And waited. He finally showed up an hour later. I asked him what he had been up to...same old same old...

I tuned the TV on to watch Mansfield Park (I am a sucker for Jane Austen). Wait. What time is it? Only 8pm? What? This must be wrong. It is 9pm. I know it is 9pm. My computer says it is 9pm.

Ah, but my computer was made in America. It thinks daylight savings happened, but it hasn't yet in the UK. I was living my life an hour ahead of time thanks to faulty information. So, I ask, are we as a society too dependent on technology*?

*I of course ask this as my three year old is sitting here "writing" in Open Office on my six year old's netbook.

Yes i do think on occasions that we have become slaves to technology.
I am a sucker for everything Jane Austen too. Yay we have something in common.
When I was in college (before computers!), I never watched the news so I was ALWAYS missing the time change! I'd show up for church an hour early, REALLY angry that I could've still been sleeping!!

So, in my case, it's not technology that's the problem, it's ME!!
Yes I think we have become overly dependent on technology and I love all my gadgets!!! LOL!! I loved where you said your three year old was on the netbook! LOL! That is about the long and short of it! We are all hooked!

I spent the whole day an hour behind. What is up with that?
Yes definitely!
Would I change that though?
I hate daylight savings time. I spend all day checking the time because I feel off somehow. Ugh.
I guess now you will be prepared for when it really happens over there.
What kind of a geek would I be if I wasn't dependent upon technology?
muhahahahhahaaa! And yes, I think so. And I hate this time of year because it totally fucks up my sleep. I need sleep!!!
OH and you have an award at my spot!
Well, we're definitely dependant on it, but we were dependant on watches and clocks before that so I don't think it's a bad thing. I was at a lecture last year where the speaker (child expert Sir Ken Robinson) did an experiment with the audience. Basically every person under the age of 25 wasn't even wearing a watch (got the time from their phones) and everyone over 25 was!
It's really sad, but we signed my six year old up for an e-mail address so she could get on facebook in order to play Farmville. My four year old can't wait until she's a school ager so she can have her own farm. Yes, it is indeed a sad, sad state of affairs.
We showed up at a restaurant yesterday in Bath thinking we may have made a mistake about the time - we had heard it was daylight savings time on Saturday night, but forgot until we arrived at the restaurant. When we asked the restaurant manager, he gave us a strange look. I guess it is just in America! I've been off the computer for 10 days now, and it feels strange to come back on. So, yes and no to answer your question (I'm capable of making my own dumb mistakes without the help of a computer)
I set all the clocks in my house yesterday. Except for my alarm clock. So I woke up an hour late this morning. But! Got out of the house with a 4 year old in under 15 minutes, both of us dressed and fed. I got to work on time and I want a prize dammit.
Does your computer have a way of synchronizing with a time server. You should set your clock to do so. That way you can make sure that your computer always has the right time (even when the time changes for daylight savings time).
Since we're technologically 60 odd years past when daylight savings was first introduced, do you think we could stop it now?
LOL-you gotta hate when that happens!
We're all feeling a little sluggish today. How can one hour make such a difference??

PS. Love Jane Austen, too!
oh boy, that is funny! i can really imagine this happening to me! Yes, we are far too dependant on technology here too!
oh goodness, that is hilarious! LOL
Too funny that you brought this up! We had a bad storm here in NYC this past weekend and were without power for a good 12-hours. We were going through withdrawals without all the technology that supplments our lives!
that is hysterical.. American pc in the UK, who would have thought
